Shweta Dabholkar on how the IELTS scholarship helped her pursue the course of her choice.
Ever since I was a child, I had a keen interest in culture and development. And hence, upon graduation, I decided to pursue an MSc in Anthropology and Development from the London School of Economics (LSE).
Like most universities overseas do, the LSE too required an Eng lish proficiency test score as a prerequisite.
Hence, I appeared for the IELTS via the British Council office in Mumbai. A few days later, I was informed about the IELTS scholarship. The scholarship awards 10 meritorious students with Rs 3,00,000 each. The amount can be used to pay their tuition fees. I immediately decided to apply. Initially, we were asked to send an essay on a topic given by the council. Of the many applications received, the council, on the basis of the essay shortlisted 40 candidates who performed well in the essay as well as the IELTS (minimum score of 6.0). I was then asked to work on a presentation and appear for a personal interview before being informed that I had won the award. The scholarship not only reduced my financial burden, but also helped me gain confidence in myself.
After my MSc in Anthropology and Development, I intend to pursue a PhD programme. Having the award on my CV will help me invite grants and scholarships that will aid me in my future endeavours.
